New Initiative on Green Waste – Update

Amovate are pleased to announce that the Aljezur Câmara are about to launch a real initiative on Green Waste.
Last Friday at the Town Hall the President José Manuel Lucas Gonçalves…..and Antonio Carvalho Director, met with the Amovate President Matt Darcy together with the Vice President Ian Bedford and the Administrator Steve Scott. They were told of the Câmara’s intention is to open a new station to deposit Green Waste within easy reach of Vale Da Telha.

The station due to be open later this year will allow both householders and contractors to take their garden waste and place it in large bins for removal to the Algar Depot.

This will initially be free of charge with the hope that it will stop people depositing such rubbish at the domestic bin collecting areas.

Of course the Câmara are aware that there are limited funds to carry out this operation and therefore the station will have a schedule of opening times.

You will also have noticed additional recycling banks around the Vale da Telha area. The Câmara intend to increase these numbers in the coming months to help deal with the Summer season.

Amovate greatly support this venture that will go a long way to helping clean up areas within VDT that are not only an eyesore, but a health and fire hazard.

Amovate have made it clear to the Câmara that it would like to see this area enlarged to take on general small building project material waste, as well as larger household goods such as fridges and furniture. However, they say that at present there is a problem dealing with these other items mainly due to costs. They will be issuing a phone number that can be used for the house hold goods to be collected from home. Building waste is an expensive waste to dispose of and any expansion on the proposals will need careful consideration especially financial input from others.

Amovate and the Câmara after the scheme is underway, will look to further the venture but initially the correct disposal of Green Waste is paramount in a more cost effective and suitable manner than at present.

Representatives from the Câmara, the Junta de Freguesia, Algar, the Costa Vincentina National Park and the GNR hopefully will attend a meeting on 4th June to expand and inform the residents of this venture, and the implications of dumping waste in places other than this new station.

Householders and visitors are reminded that The Câmara, Green Waste Police, The Park Authority and the GNR ALL have the ability to fine people for discarding any of these waste objects whether at bins, within the National Park itself or any fly tipping.
The householder from where it has been generated from, as well as the contractor depositing the waste are responsible and liable, these fines are not small and range from hundreds to thousands of euros per fine so be warned.

Adverts and posters will be placed around VDT to inform householders of the venue.

Land Clearance in the Local Area

The Amovate President this morning had a telephone conversation with Comandante Mario from the Bombeiros, in regard to the fire protection requirements in the Vale da Telha area. This is in advance of a meeting Amovate hope to have with the Comandante in the next few days.

At this moment in time they still don’t know exactly what classification Vale da Telha comes under, according to the park authority and detailed plan (plano de pormenor), so it is difficult for him to advise exactly what has to be done.

Firstly, he advised that the deadline has now been moved to the 30^th of April.
His suggestions to owners at the moment are that not all trees need to be cut down, there is no problem having trees on your land inside Vale da Telha as it would be very difficult for a fire to start that way. However, what he says is important is that trees should be 5m away from dwellings and cut up to 4m above ground level, also that ground vegetation such as dense natural bushes and fallen branches, twigs pine cones, need to be cleared as a safety measure as they are exceptionally flammable. To people who are bordering the national park, those properties on the perimeter, there needs to be 10m cleared from their fences to the park land. This has been done over the years by the Camâra, and he is waiting to see if they do it this year. It is apparently not their responsibility, it is the responsibility of the owners of each plot, but he will let us know better when he can have a meeting with us.
He also emphasised that this is not an excuse for everybody to cut everything down!

The bombeiros have asked for a list of all the owners of plots and land that are empty in Vale da Telha and the surrounding areas in order that they can contact them and advise them that plots need to be cleared, you may have seen a few being done around already.

In summary, to owners who have empty plots; it is advisable to have them cleared. To owners of properties in Vale da Telha; large trees need to have their branches cut 4m above ground level and must be 5 m from the house itself. With fruit trees etc. we assume this is not applicable, but definitely larger pines, and eucalyptus etc. and definitely anything that shades the property must be cut back. Owners on the perimeter adjoining the national park should make a 10m break-line as well, however we can wait and see if the Camâra will do it again. Any plots bordering your property that have lots of trees, the Bombeiros are trying to identify owners as it is each individual owners responsibility.

The ICNF (the Government authority for forestry management and land cleaning etc.) have issued posters showing the correct way to clean your land. These are new official up to date versions released in February 2018 and supersede earlier versions.

Amovate is sorry to inform people that at present the Post Box administration for Amovate Post Boxes has halted, as the person responsible for this has been admitted to Hospital and the Committee needs a short while to sort the situation.
