Charity Christmas Card – UPDATE

christmas_card17

UPDATE!!

This year’s Charity Christmas Card raised €139 which is fantastic….Thanks to all those who used it….Not only does it save on people buying and sending cards but it helps raise money for the needy causes we support.

Lets hope next year more people will use this facility, especially for people close by that you see regularly, but still send cards to.

………………………………………

We have again been asked to run the Charity Christmas Card Wall…….we have already raised in excess of €65 !

The idea of the Charity Christmas Card is…….. instead of handing out Christmas cards to all your friends in Vale da Telha, Aljezur and the surrounding areas, whom you probably see on a regular basis, why not save money and time and donate whatever you wish to the Amovate Charity fund.  (To make this worthwhile, we are looking for a minimum donation of €2)

For this donation, we will post your name on our Christmas Wall below, and then all your friends can see for themselves that you are sending your good wishes for the Festive Season!.

If you wish to participate, please download and complete the form below, and hand it in at the Amovate office, or to any Amovate Committee Member, together with your donation.  Alternatively, if you are unable to print the form, you can collect one from the Amovate office.

If you are not here over the Christmas period, you can still take part.  Just e mail us on info@amovate.com with your pledge, and the names you wish to appear on the Wall, and you can complete payment on your return.

Charity Walkers Donate 26 Wheelchairs To Portimao Hospital

On Thursday 22nd October, Cath Baker presented Portimao Hospital with 26 new wheelchairs to be spread around the units of the hospital.

The donation valued at around €2,300 was the result of Cath’s Charity Bar Walk a month earlier by residents of Vale da Telha and the surrounding areas.

The walk—basically a 4km fancy dress pub crawl by just over 50 people from Arrifana to Vale da Telha—raised an awesome final total of €2,905.63.

And Cath and husband Peter, who won the ladies’ and mens’ categories in the Fancy Dress contest after the walk again donned—along with fellow organiser Steve Scott—their costumes to make the presentation to hospital staff.

The money raised was used to buy 25 new wheelchairs from the UK, with two other people inspired by the walk also donating a 26th wheelchair, and a walking frame which will be used by the orthopaedics unit. The donation also included 50 hot/cold gel packs for pain relief.

The presentation took place outside the hospital’s main entrance and the wheelchairs were received by Dr. Luisa Arez, Deputy Clinical Director and nurse Arsénio Gregório, representing the Director of Nursing. Also present were representatives of the different units throughout the hospital that will benefit from the donation.

Amovate’s retired President Peter Johnson and Vale da Telha resident Antonio (Tony) Lopes were also there, having helped with the transportation of the wheelchairs from Cath’s home in Vale da Telha down to the hospital in their own vehicles.

The fundraiser, backed as usual by Amovate whose President John Bergstrom-Potter also handed over a cheque for €250 from the association before the trip to Portimao Hospital, was Cath’s own brainchild.

She explained that it was inspired by the charity pub crawls which were so popular back in her native Lancashire. Four years ago another of her charity projects saw her raise the funds to buy nine new wheelchairs for the hospital’s orthopaedic department.

This time a visit to the oncology clinic prompted the bar walk. Cath made the presentation again wearing the “half-man, half-woman” costume that won her the Best Fancy Dress Outfit (Ladies) award following the walk. She was accompanied by her husband Peter, aka the JCB digger and driver (winner of the male category) and fellow organiser Steve Scott, dressed in his “Not The Naked Chef” costume.

Cath explained: “On my visit there I saw one lady in a terrible state after chemotherapy. She could barely stand and there was no wheelchair to get her to her car. “It broke my heart and I just needed to do something.”  Cath, who was also assisted in setting up the walk by Brian Jutsum, went on: “The idea was to take a serious cause, like raising funds for the hospital, but to add the fun element of dropping off at nine selected bars, having a sup or two and enjoying a little craic and banter.

“The bar owners all happily joined in, agreeing to make donations for each drink sold. “One or two of the walkers, having taken on a little too much liquid refreshment along the way, were perhaps staggering a little at the finish.

“But at least they did so knowing that the money they have helped to raise will see some of the hospital’s infirm

patients get around a little easier thanks to the wheelchairs we have been able to provide. “That was well worth all the sore heads the following morning!”

The wheelchairs, all of which have been stamped “Donated by Vale da Telha Charity Bar Walkers”, were shipped from the UK by Algarve

Cath declared: “Because of their fantastic generosity we now have €736.34 left over, which will be used to buy other equipment for the oncology unit. I have already bought a camera they asked for, and I will talk to the unit administrators to ascertain what else they need from the extra cash”.

Four of the wheelchairs, 20 gel packs and the digital camera were immediately earmarked for the oncology unit which first triggered the charity walk.

And following discussions with the hospital authorities 10 wheelchairs, a walker and 30 bags of gel will go to orthopaedics, six wheelchairs to Accident & Emergency and the final six to the outpatients unit.

A hospital spokesman told us: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by Mrs Baker and the people of the Vale da Telha area. We were suffering from a serious shortage of wheelchairs and this amazing donation will benefit every unit in the hospital”.

Amovate’s Family Fun Day Helps A Family In Need

Amovate Raises Funds For A Severely Disabled Boy

Diego Messias Pedrosa

Amovate’s Family Fun Day has helped to make the life of a family with a severely disabled child just a little easier.

Some of the funds raised from the keynote event have been used to buy all of the fittings required for a new wetroom for two year-old toddler Diego Messias Pedrosa who is suffering from cerebral palsy.

Diego lives with his great grandmother in Burgau and she has been having immense problems dealing with Diego’s basic daily needs like bathing and feeding.

The toddler is said to be a happy little boy despite the severity of his cerebral palsy, and the fact that he has to spend a lot of time in hospital.

The family, according to reports, receive no support from the Portuguese government and Diego’s great grandmother, who also works at the Esquina restaurant in Burgau to help support him, faces a constant struggle to obtain the specialist equipment he needs.

Diego’s medication alone costs €80 per month and the equipment he needs is not only to ensure that Diego is safe and comfortable but also to aid his great grandmother with day-to-day activities like bathing and feeding.

So, Amovate stepped in, and with €198.31 of the funds raised at last month’s Family Fun Day, we have purchased all of the fittings required to convert his grandmother’s bathroom into a wet room.

The firm Raminhos & Raminhos just outside of Lagos from whom we bought the items also donated all of the tiles required along with the adhesive and grout.

Amovate was responding to an appeal launched in June to raise money for Diego and we felt it fitting that our Family Fun Day could help a family in need.

Campaigners are now trying to raise the cash for a specialised pushchair tailored to Diego’s needs but which costs in the region of €5,000.

Natasha Seromenho who is spearheading the fundraising efforts, along with Louise Chamberlain who is also deeply involved with fundraising, says: “Diego’s cerebral palsy is severe. He cannot hold his heads up, he cannot stand and until now doctors have been unable to say whether he will be able to walk at any time in the future.

“He is approaching his third birthday and cannot talk although he makes a few sounds which suggest he trying, although again only time will tell.”

Family Fun Day – 1st August

Amovate Family Fun Day 2015A wise woman once said: “As long as you’re having fun, you’re doing the right thing”.

So, why not do the right thing and come along to Amovate’s Blue Riband Event for 2015—the Family Fun Day, our main attraction of the year.

It will take place from 2pm-8pm on Saturday August 1st at the large field in front of Hugo’s Bar at the apartments on the road leading towards Arrifana and we are planning to pack the afternoon and evening with a variety of activities, events and entertainments for the whole family to enjoy.

====

“I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.”
Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat

====

Clearly, on the first day of August, we ARE expecting sunshine, not rain, and we do intend that everyone will have lots of good fun, whatever the weather has in store!

Last year’s family-oriented event saw perhaps more kids enjoying themselves than anyone’s ever seen in one place on Vale da Telha…and it certainly was a Fun-in-the-Sun Day!

Now, Amovate, your local community association aims to have another FUN-tastic day, plenty of fun and games with even more people having a great time and so much for the family to enjoy together.

Here’s what to expect as you embark on a wonderful afternoon and evening hosted by Amovate and Hugo’s Bar:

MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT

Bombeiros Band                               15.30 to 16.30

Caporeira Dancers                           16.30 to 17.00

Areano (singer/ guitarist)             17.00 to 20.00

But while all of this is going on there is so much for the kids to do.

There will be donkey rides, a bouncy castle, face-painting and hair-braiding.

They can play games on The Cube, take pot-shots on a coconut shy or play on a football machine.

For the adults there are a variety of stalls offering jewellery, foot treatment, Aloe Vera as well as one organised by the Conferencia de Nossa Senhora D´Alva, the childrens’ charity in Aljezur.

And the Petanca Club are also holding a boules competition should you wish to try your hand.

On a more serious note, should you wish, you can sit down with a representative of Avalon and discuss funeral plans.

Programmes for this event will soon be on sale at €1 apiece and each one includes a lucky number which will be entered into a prize draw. If you are not able to buy one in advance they will also be available on the day.

Just as importantly, while everybody’s having such a good time they’ll be helping to raise more money for the charities supported every year by Amovate.

We are proud that through our Charity Fund we have helped local families in need, helped facilitate the donation of €50,000 worth of firefighting and life-saving equipment for Aljezur Bombeiros plus three life-saving defibrillators, two for the Bombeiros to use in their vehicles and the other for the use of residents in Vale da Telha and the surrounding districts.

We have provided nine wheelchairs for Portimao Hospital, a ripple bed to ease the suffering of long-term bedridden patients, a much-needed new computer for a rehabilitation centre and a washing machine for a local charity, which has also received cash donations from Amovate.

So, while you are having as good time today you can do so knowing you will also be helping good causes in your area.

So come along, bring the family, support our local worthy causes…and have a great time in the process!

Now that’s what you call having FUN!
