Civic dignitaries from Germany have been in Vale da Telha this week.
Mayor Thomas Ebert, and council officials of Kürnach in Bavaria—the twin town of Aljezur—were guests at a Camara-hosted dinner in the Vale da Telha Restaurante on the Pines roundabout.
Gifts were exchanged following a four-course meal—the Aljezur officials were clearly delighted with their beer steins!—and there were also the obligatory speeches.
Kürnach, with a population of around 4,500, has been one of Aljezur’s two twin towns since October 10th 1987. The other is Boa Vista in the Cape Verde islands.
Kürnach, which is in the state of Bavaria, started life as a tiny rural village but is now described as a peripheral town to the city of Würzburg.
The twinning agreement gives scope for cultural and sporting exchanges and in recent years several visits have been organised on both sides involving residents, youth groups and associations.
Shortly after the official twinning documents were signed in 1987 the two towns created the Twinning Association of Aljezur and the Partnerschafskomitees Kürnach eV, with the aim of promoting events and foster twinning between the two communities.
