Charity Appeal

Following discussions with the St Vincent de Paul Society in Aljezur, Amovate is buying bedding and blankets to the value of €200 for distribution to some of the area’s neediest families.

The Society has also asked us to make it known not just to our members but also to the people of Vale da Telha—already well respected by the local Portuguese population for its generosity to good causes—that they would greatly appreciate further donations in this regard.

Apparently there is a real need right across the district for warm, clean bedding, sheets, blankets, duvets, pillows, pillow cases to be distributed to families who simply do not have these basic essentials for making their lives more comfortable.

If you have any of these items you can spare and would like to donate to a really good cause, to people who would truly appreciate the gifts for themselves and their children, please contact:

info@amovate.com

As you may already know Amovate and Sarah and John’s Vale da Telha.eu website has been working with the bank and the local school to make sure none of the most needy children goes without a present.

In that respect we have made monies from our Charity Fund available to this very special good cause.

Attached is a copy of the response from BPI Bank in the form of a Christmas Card.

Not only are the 20 plus books donated by Amovate going to needy children but the Bank Staff who have also supplied books have asked if it was possible for these to also go in the name of Amovate, which of course the President agreed.

But please, everyone, keep up the good work doing what you are doing—the more of us working to give these families a decent Christmas the better.

Following an appeal by the St Vincent De Paul Society we are also arranging for the purchase of a new washing machine which will be sourced from a local Aljezur business and presented to the Society to use as they wish.

Aljezurense 1 – 3 Monchiquense

The Local derby, and everyone seemed up for it, but this all soured when Aljezurense found themselves 0 – 2 down after 240 seconds. The first, when a bad pass found a visiting player and the ball was knocked forward to an unmarked forward who looked a long way off side, his cross shot buried its self in the roof of the home goal.

The second another  poor pass being intercepted and again a cross shot from the left made it 0 – 2 and only six Aljezurense players had touched the ball, one of those being Sam who had kicked off twice.

The visitors were now rampant and were first to most balls, and hit tackles like they were going to win at all costs as to date they had only won one match. Exceptionally poor officials were allowing some tackles that were serious fouls to go, and sad to say the visitors had started time wasting from the second goal.

Yet another new line up saw Eddy 14 on the bench as well as Diago 10. There is still no pattern to the play with, Lawrence 8, Dani 23 and Serra 16 in mid field but all playing centrally.  The holes left in front of the defence on the flanks expose the full backs, and time and time again the opposition took great advantage of these.

Lawrence tried hard to slide balls to the forwards as did Dani but generally the passes went missing mainly due to the will to win by the visitors.

Aljezurense although playing badly, had 4 good chances to score.  First Sam 9 had a good shot saved on the line, Carlinhos 2 miss headed a corner with the goal open from within the goal area, Joao doing the same just after, and just before halftime Lawrence snapped at a shot that the keeper saved.

Half Time Aljezurense 0 – 2 Monchiquense

Changes were expected but non happened and much the same continued. Passes were going astray, time wasting, and visiting players screaming for fouls that the hapless referee agreed to.  Aljezurense needed to relax on the ball and play telling passes but it was not to be.

Carlinhos 2 missed three goal opportunities one when he managed to head the ball over the bar from 3 metres with the goal in front of him undefended, the second another header from a corner from the edge of the goal area went wide. Another with a weak shot from 10 metres straight at the keeper.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men when Serra 16  was sent from the field for retaliation and the opposing defender went for the initial attack.  The visiting goalkeeper got in on the act and threw himself to the ground screaming blue murder to waste more time.

Aljezurense at last got some good play together with Diogo 10 introduced to the game.  His speed caused problems to the visitors and a good cross from him found Sam 9 who on the second attempt made the score 1 – 2.

It was all Aljezurense now and they carved out several chances to level the score but failed. With 5 minutes to go Calinhos was dismissed for something he said to the Referee,  leaving the home team floundering, and with all out attack by the home team looking for a point the defence were out run and the visitors made the score 1 – 3 with a long shot into an empty net.

It now looks like a bottom three position will be the best that can be achieved, this display was abysmal not only individually but team wise there still is no shape, pattern or set piece skills. Why send certain defenders forward for set piece chances when they do not have the simple ability to head a ball other than let the ball hit them. It’s time to have a settled side and at least play the same team on a regular basis. Missing one training session seems a ridiculous reason to be dropped especially as the players are not professional and have other commitments.

Sort the defence and midfield out play 4-4-2 to give greater strength to the defence in depth and spread the midfield across the width of the pitch. The players look beat before they start and this must change to see better results, generally the majority of the squad are far better than the results show and the New Year must see these changes before the team gets caught too far behind in the bottom 3 positions.

Bad officials in this league is not an excuse and players get frustrated by this but unfortunately you have to take it on the chin and graft out results, encourage each other and have faith in your ability, doing this might just turn things around.

Charity Christmas Card

The idea of the Charity Christmas Card is…….. instead of handing out Christmas cards to all your friends in Vale da Telha, Aljezur and the surrounding areas, whom you probably see on a regular basis, why not save money and time and donate whatever you wish to the Amovate Charity fund.  (To make this worthwhile, we are looking for a minimum donation of €2)

For this donation, we will post your name on our Christmas Wall below, and then all your friends can see for themselves that you are sending your good wishes for the Festive Season!.

If you wish to participate, please download and complete the form below, and hand it in at the Amovate office, or to any Amovate Committee Member, together with your donation.  Alternatively, if you are unable to print the form, you can collect one from the Amovate office.

If you are not here over the Christmas period, you can still take part.  Just e mail us on info@amovate.com with your pledge, and the names you wish to appear on the Wall, and you can complete payment on your return.

Capoeira Classes

Capoeira is a game of attacking and defensive movements, for the first time developed by the African slaves that were brought to Brazil in colonial times. Capoeira combines music, singing en movements, resulting in a fascinating game. Capoeira is of the people and can be practiced by anyone, man or woman, youth or elderly, and is good for body and mind equally.

Professor Filósofo was formed by mestre Marreta, within the capoeira school Berimbau de Ouro. He has experience with giving classes in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and at various workshops in the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. Right now, he is about to start classes here in Aljezur and Vale da Telha. If you are interested or want more information, please send an email to: capofilosofo@gmail.com

New Satellite: Will We Lose Our UK TV Signal?

D-Day looming…

Doug, he of “Doug the Dish” fame, has e-mailed us with this update (1 Dec):

Several channels will be transferred next Tuesday when we should get a better idea of what is happening with our reception.

We have received this further update from Doug regarding the situation over satellite reception (5 Dec):

Some good news regarding 2F

These are some updates I am receiving, which, although I cannot guarantee it as accurate, is slightly better news….

Firstly, some channels are really going to move and might already have done so, such as:

Channel 5

5 USA

5* (Five Star)

4seven

Channel 4 HD?

BUT as of tomorrow, because the new Astra 2F is lacking some frequencies range it cannot accommodate some channels from Astra 1N broadcasting on those frequencies, therefore some of these channels will stay on Astra 1N until new Astra 2E arrives on orbit in Jun/Jul 2013.

These channels should stay for now:

BBC HD

BBC ONE HD

ITV 1 HD

Channel 4 HD

Channel 4

E4

FILM 4

ITV 2

ITV 3

ITV 4

BBC TWO

BBC THREE

BBC FOUR

CBBC

There is also some information here, too:

Astra 2E to be launched in 03/2013 and it will take at least 2 months to test and move to its final position on orbit, and

http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_chr/lau2013.htm

There are growing concerns that some or all of us could soon lose our UK TV signals following the launch of a new satellite.

A recent report in the Portugal News by Sky Realm here on the Algarve, headlined “The Future of Sky & Freesat”, sums up the whole situation, explaining:

With rumours abounding about the renewal of the Astra 2D satellite early in 2013 Sky Realm feels it is the right time to let all customers know what it will mean for watching their favourite programmes.

Firstly, they stress, this has nothing to do with the digital changeover in the UK as Sky and Freesat has been digital for many years.

There are several satellites aligned in space which homeowners’ satellite dishes point at, enabling views to watch Sky and Freesat.

One of these, called Astra 2D is a satellite that transmits most of the free channels including BBC, ITV, C4, E4 More4 and C5. This satellite has now grown old and is in need of replacing, with the new satellite due to take over in early 2013.

The problem is that while the signal in UK and Ireland will improve as a result of the new satellite, the signal at the extremities such as in the Algarve will be slightly weaker.

Anyone with a good quality prime-focus dish of at least 1.4m should not really notice much difference. However, people who are getting by with a 1.2m or 1.3m dish at the moment are at risk of losing some channels.

What Sky Realm is now advising its customers is to fit the largest dish they can accommodate following the motto big is beautiful.

The company says it is also important to know that this may not affect customers from the Lisbon area up through the Silver Coast as the signal up there is much stronger.

The other satellites that supply customers’ Sky channels are Astra 2A, 2B and Eurobird. Whilst these are also nearing the end of their lives they are not due to be replaced until the start of 2014.

To cut a long story short, your free channels will get weaker so insist on the right dish for the job.

The details of the new satellite can be found on this website:

http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2012/11/21/astra-2f-ready-for-disputed-orbital-slot/

Their story reads: Astra 2F ready for disputed orbital slot

November 21, 2012 11.56 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Picture: SES

The Astra 2F satellite has entered commercial service.

The SES-operated satellite has now completed its in-orbit testing and is fully operational within the 28.2/28.5 degrees East neighbourhood. The 52nd SES satellite was successfully launched on board an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana, on September 28, 2012.

The map shown here with Portugal on the fringes of the satellite transmission area apparently reflects the coverage picked up by a 1.2m dish, although that (the size of the dish) isn’t confirmed.

Another website also offers technical information on the situation, should you be able to negotiate your way around it…

http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm

On that same site there is this forum-type discussion page, with technicians and experts (and do I see the name of our very own Doug from the extreme Western Algarve) reporting the signal status from different parts of Europe.

By no means should it be regarded as a recommendation of any sort, nor should it be taken as an authoritative account of the situation regarding the satellite changeover.
