Lightning Strike

All the damage was caused in a flash—a single flash of lightning that blew holes in their villa roof, vapourised a tall chimney stack and sent electrical sockets flying out of the walls.

For Sue and Tony Quickfall on Picao de Baixo it brought too close to home the awesome power of nature.

Friday’s electrical storm directly over Vale da Telha caused power failures and some damage. But nobody fared worse than the Quickfalls shortly after 8am when a flash of lightning struck their villa, the tallest building in that part of Paisagem Oceano.

In an instant—quite literally a flash—the chimney disappeared and the lightning blew several holes in the roof, setting a fire that, fortunately, the heavy rain quickly extinguished.

The power of the strike sent a wave of energy down the chimney and blew out the glass front on their fireplace, sending shards of glass flying around the living room.

Fortunately, the expats from Yorkshire were upstairs at the time and Tony recalled: “It was like a bomb going off.

“Brickwork, plaster and dust rained down, power sockets flew out of the walls, the internet phone connection melted and suddenly we could see the sky through the ceiling in one of the bedrooms.”

The blast left debris in surrounding gardens but didn’t diminish Sue’s down-to-earth Yorkshire humour.

“While I was moving the bed away from the water coming through the roof I found a 1 Euro coin that must have rolled under there some time. It shows that inside every cloud there’s a silver lining.”

The lightning strike also meant that Sue and Tony had to call off their long weekend to Gibraltar. They had been getting to ready to leave on the trip and Sue said: “It’s a good job we hadn’t set out earlier.”

Vale da Telha’s support system swung swiftly into operation for the two Amovate members, as a circle of friends raced to the house, and began work immediately repairing the damage, which will cost a considerable amount to put right but which, fortunately, is covered by insurance.

Bob’s New Keep Fit Classes – Now Started!

Feeling a bit sluggish?

Worried about getting back into the same size bikini as last year?

Thinking that with the extortionate cost of buying fuel for the car it might be best to start walking to the local shops, bars, restaurants but wondering whether your fitness is up to it?

Don’t get downhearted—get FIT!

Amovate already has a thriving Keep Fit club organised by Bob Packham at the Old Schoolhouse, which meets twice weekly for a 10-15 minute aerobic workout followed by circuit training in sessions lasting no more than a total of one hour.

There is room, incidentally, for more people who’d like to join in—the classes are held on Mondays at 11.30am—12.30pm and Wednesdays from 11am-12 noon and cost €2.50 per session.

Bob’s new gym at Amovate opened on Thursday and opened not with a bang, more of an apologetic cough.

Five people turned up to use the new fitness facilities in the first of the gym sessions created and supervised by Bob Packham.

Those who did turn up were enthusiastic about the wide range of equipment and the lay-out, and plan to use it on a regular basis.

And Bob, ever the optimist whose cheerful ‘glass is half full, not half empty’ philosophy endears him to all who know him is convinced that more people will begin turning up once word gets around.

These pictures were taken at that first session and although they show plenty of empty space in the room set aside for the gym sessions they also show not just how well Bob has fitted out and arranged the space, but also the quality of the kit he has supplied via his Keep Fit classes.

These include two excellent cross-training machines, two exercise bikes, tread machines, weights and weights bench, rowing machine, steps, etc; plenty to keep you going.

Bob has pledged to keep the new sessions going for the foreseeable future and the next one will take place on Saturday from 11am to 12 noon.

Thereafter the gym will be available each Saturday and on every Thursday from 6pm to 7pm.

So, let’s just hope that Bob’s enthusiasm, and that of those who attended the first session will rub off on more people as time goes by.

You can just turn up, sign in, pay your €2.50, and use the equipment at your own pace, unless you want Bob to monitor your progress and give advice.

Beverages such as tea (bags), coffee (instant), water, beer, soft drinks etc will be available.

So, if you are not sure whether it’s for you or not, come along anyway, have a look and a chat over a drink and make up your own mind…

Incidentally, if anyone has any gym or exercise equipment of a decent quality that they no longer use, or which is lying forgotten at the back of your garage or garden shed, why not donate it to Amovate where it will find a good home and be put to good use.

Just give Bob a ring on 91 796 1555 and he’ll arrange to have it collected.

**Incidentally, Bob points out that as next Monday, April 25th is not just Easter Monday, but is also a Bank Holiday here in Portugal, the 11.30 am Keep Fit class has been postponed. Wednesday’s class will go ahead as normal at 11am.

Post Box Update – Tennis Courts & Apartments

Thank you to all who have co-operated so far with the return of the post box forms. We are now able to form an up to date register of users and how many free boxes we have, and this will continue for some time until we are satisfied that nil reply means the box is no longer in use.

If you know people who have a post box and live most of the year away from Vale Da Telha we would appreciate an e-mail to info@amovate.com so we can highlight it on our records and wait for the  occupier to come to Portugal and complete their form.

It is apparent that some original users of Post Boxes who have sold their property on have also passed on the keys to the new owners.  Whilst we generally do not have a real problem with this, people are reminded that it is not their box, and keys should be handed back to Amovate for forwarding onto the new users so our records can be continually kept up to date.

Also we have had several requests for box movement by users, generally from the Apartments to the Tennis Courts. We will try and resolve this situation as soon as possible, but we have to give the users at the Tennis Courts reasonable time to return their forms.  However it would appear that we might be able to do this in the future, and if you have mailed us already with this request we will notify you as soon as a box becomes available.

Just to make an obvious point, if you have made this request or are thinking of doing so, it will mean a Post Box Number change (i.e. change of address), not simply a change of location.

Again thank you for your assistance so far.

If anyone has any problems accessing their post boxes since the changes, please e mail us on info@amovate.com or contact Peter Johnson on 961 666 825 and we will deal with your problem.
