Workshop Leader:

Professor Fernandes is a researcher at the Center for Marine and Environmental Research at the University of Algarve, where he develops research in stratigraphy, sedimentology, geochemistry, palynology, organic petrology, geochronology, and thermochronology, in Portugal, Spain, and Mozambique. He is very familiar with the local geology of the South West Coast.

Requirements:

  • We will be doing two non-strenuous beach or cliff walks. Participants need to be fit enough for that level of activity.
  • Dress appropriately for the afternoon forecast (the event will proceed rain or shine.
  • Car transportation is required from Amovate to the cafe, from the cafe to Monte Clérigo and on to Arrifana. If you lack a vehicle, we will attempt to assist in organizing car pooling with other participants. The entry form has a place to indicate this.

Itinerary:

Morning Session:

We will meet at the Amovate School House in Vales at 10:00 am where we will learn about the story of the rocks in this part of Portugal. At approximately 12:00 pm we will drive to a cafe for lunch.

Lunch Break:

The meal at the cafe is not included in the price. Participants will order and pay individually but eat together in groups in order to enable discussion of what we’ve learned so far. Those wishing to eat at home are free to do so and rejoin the workshop at Monte Clérigo.

Monte Clérigo:

Following lunch we will drive directly to Monte Clérigo for a session of walking while learning about the rock formations exposed along the cliffs.

Arrifana:

Following the session at Monte Clérigo we will drive to Arrifana for a second walking session. The workshop will conclude at the end of this walk. Participants will depart for home directly from Arrifana.
