The Steve Nicholls Macieira Challenge Trophy

Another successful VdT Golf Society day out at Alamos Golf Course.

The change from the original date worked wonders and the course was in great condition after so many weeks of rain.  The first thing everyone noticed was just how full the lakes and rivers were and probably the water level is now higher than last winter.

The Steve Nicholls Challenge Trophy was competed for in Medal scores, with a Stableford Competition running along side.

Chris Dickens produced a short Ode to Steve which was much appreciated  by all and reflected all the memories we have of the Old Boy……..

Ode to Steve Nicholls

“Christopher, as I live and breathe,

Always the greeting from our friend Steve”

“So, you’ve been out playing with those golf toys,

See, I told you a Medal would sort the men from the boys”

“If I’d have played, Tourettes Syndrome would have kicked in for sure,

Players would have had to hide and hunker,

Oh b*****ks, is that another one in the bunker”

“Another day in paradise, if my Maceira Challenge hasn’t lightened your load,

Don’t go just yet, just stay, and have another one for the road”

“Here we are at another successful VdT Golf Society Day,

If Steve was here, he would have just wanted to play”

“To all of us who knew Steve, we still remember, and think of him often,

So on that last note we’ll raise a glass to toast, Steve is not forgotten”

…………………

Our thanks go to Becky Nicholls for Sponsoring the Macieira Open

Results – February Society Day

Below are the results from last Thursday, a bit chilly but no rain.

The course was upped for the Portuguese professionals that were playing a tournament so the greens were like lightning…A bit too quick for some of us.

I must apologise to Liam for not mentioning the fact that this was his last society day before moving back to England and he won the day with an excellent 34 points…Well Done….Safe Travels and hopefully we will see you back here on holiday sometime.

VDT GS Witnessed its first Hole In One when Steve Young carressed his ball from tee to green on the 12th par 3 ….Well Done Steve, Great to witness the shot.

At the presentation on sale was our first attempt to bolster the funds with the sale of tickets on the Football Card, not many about but after giving out the prize we made €22 profit….Hopefully more in March .

Which leads me onto our next day which unfortunately on 29th March. I did try to rearrange the date but they only had start times between 7.20am and 8.20am which I thought a bit early for the 40 min travel time.

Another slight alteration is that Restaurante Font do Vale is closed on this day so I am trying to negotiate another venue.

I am speaking with Hugo and this will probably mean a reasonable set menu with a small choice of food.

It would be good to know what you think, but Hugo’s bar is now a good venue as a back up in my opinion.

Beddys Birthday Bash on the 29th March means you have loads of time to practice and try and wrench the trophy off Steve Scott the only winner so far on both the 2016 and 2017 days.

New Members Welcome

Vale Da Telha Golf Society

VDT Golf Society is hitting the fairways…well sometimes and is always looking for New Members.
At present we have a healthy 33 members but with members visiting their home land we at times struggle to make 5 x 4 balls on our Golf Days.
The Society plays generally on the second Thursday of each month and interchange between the Morgado Course and Alamos. Our Calendar indicates which course and the amount per player with the use of a buggy – the calendar is at the foot of this note.
Also the Society are able to arrange tee times at other courses and members are notified by email of the day and times booked with a reasonable discount so your golf for the month could be covered.
Prizes are presented after our monthly golf day at a gathering generally The Restaurante Fonte do Vale, Vale Da Telha at 17.50 with the opportunity to stay on for a meal to extend the evening.  Partners are of course very welcome.
If you think you would like to join or need some more information please do not hesitate to make contact with Ian Bedford, the Society’s Match Secretary who is more than happy to help.
Finally just to put some budding retired ladies and gentlemen golfer’s minds at rest we are, in general mostly above 15 handicappers……going up with age but still enjoying the moment!
