Keep Fit Club Summer BBQ

On a fantastic Algarvian afternoon the Keep Fit Club held its annual Summer BBQ, trying hard to emulate the BBQs of Bob and Beddy’s in the past and it worked with flying colours.

In true tradition, the club put up the funds for the party and the beer and wine flowed until the excellent array of food was available for the throng to fill their plates on several visits.  The well cooked food was under the strict control of the KFC secret weapon and was well worth the hard work done by Mr Magic.

Many of the members helped and supplied salads, cakes, desserts, and much more for the everyone to enjoy.

Bob and Beddy were asked in a short interview if they felt it was up to the standard of other years….Bob thought long and hard but didn’t understand the question, and Beddy responded only to ask if they had run out of beer…….difficult questions but the old boys are knocking on a bit.

A great time was unfurling as the evening drew on, and the itchy feet brigade were waiting to rock the night away whilst the 60s style music played on.  One old lag was heard saying on his way home that it was a pity the hard work in the gym on Mondays and Fridays gets in the way of these great afternoon of camaraderie.

Many thanks to Amanda and Cormac and their many helpers for a FANTASTIC AFTERNOON.

Why not join them and keep reasonably fit at your own pace on Mondays and Wednesdays at 11.30am – only €2.50 a session.

This event could also be repeated at Christmas…although inside….

Keep Fit With Chris

by Matt D’Arcy

CHRIS PACKHAM, who began Amovate’s Keep Fit classes more than 10 years ago, may be back in the UK—but he’s still keen on keeping us fit!

You’ll remember that Chris’ dad Bob, and Amovate Vice-President Ian Bedford, kept the twice-weekly classes going for many years after the initial launch in 2008 before stepping down earlier this summer.

Now Amovate’s Cormac Murphy—who comes from a family of talented Rugby League and Rugby Union professionals—and other volunteers are keeping up the good work.

But Chris, a physiotherapy technical instructor with 10 years experience in the NHS, remains committed to maintaining the health and well-being of all his old friends and pupils from the Amovate classes.

He and colleague David Gunning have produced a booklet, “Fit In 50 Seconds” aimed at people with sedentary lifestyles. It is a simple 14-day exercise and nutrition plan that can easily be incorporated into your working day.

The booklet has already sold more than 1,000 copies to business and industry in the UK as employers see an opportunity for their staff to follow its advice whilst sitting at their desks or work benches, improving their health and wellbeing.

Now, through Amovate, Chris, who has an M.Sc in Exercise Science, is offering, for £6.99p, a “Fitness Pack” which includes a copy of his booklet, a stress-ball, and an ingenious water bottle, which can be attached to your belt, and then folded away after emptying.

(You can see a photograph of the Fitness Pack here)

Chris, who returned to England to take up new positions in football and hospital physiotherapy, is happy to post the pack from the UK although this could cost you another £6-£7.

He says: “If sufficient people are interested I could potentially send a number over in one delivery. But if people just wanted a copy of the booklet they can order this online at the link here, and the delivery of the book only is a lot cheaper”.

It may also be possible to have a number of the packages delivered to the English address of someone making regular trips between the UK and Vale da Telha, who could then bring them back to Portugal.

For more details, contact Chris via his email at enquiries@fitin50.co.uk, or check the website www.fitin50.co.uk.

Cormac, who is now running the Monday classes, says any new members interested should come along and join in the fun. You will find details below.

(Julia Curphey, who has professional experience in this field, having worked for Duncan Bannatyne of Dragons Den in one of his health clubs in Shropshire, will resume the Wednesday sessions from September 5th).

The fitness classes were started in 2008 by Bob and his physiotherapist son Chris…and from small beginnings come great things.

At first day we had to make do with sitting on chairs whilst rapidly tapping our feet on the floor, running up and down the room, stepping up and down on step trainers and using elastic straps as tension bands for working our muscles.

It was pretty basic stuff, but gradually Bob, Chris and Ian—who joined a few weeks after the classes began—started begging, borrowing or buying more equipment.

Now, thanks to their efforts, it’s quite possible that Amovate has the best-equipped gymnasium facilities on the Algarve’s west coast!

It is now equipped with a multi-gym, three treadmills, four cross-trainers, two rowing machines, three static exercise bikes, sit-up benches, weight benches, a couple of dozen step trainers, abdominal crunchers, a variety of equipment to tone up or strengthen various parts of your body and a large assortment of free weights.

The classes are held twice a week, at 11.30am on Monday and Wednesday at the Old Schoolhouse, situated where the road forks outside Vales, towards Arrifana to the left and Vale da Telha to the right.

We have a hard core of around 12-15 enthusiasts, with an average attendance probably of 10 to 12.

Each session lasts for one hour and normally begins with a 10-minute aerobics warm-up to music, followed by around 40-45 minutes of exercises using the equipment, weights and floor mats you can see in the accompanying pictures.

The routines are changed for each session so there’s no risk of anyone getting bored and the entire session comes with a background of enjoyable music.

It’s fun to be fit…and these classes make it fun to get fit!

So come along and see for yourselves:

All are welcome. No membership fee is required and the cost per session is just €2.50. If you would like further information please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Keep Fitters Say ‘Au Revoir’ To Bob And Ian

By Matt D’Arcy

Bob Packham and Ian Bedford stepped down as organisers of Amovate’s Keep Fit classes this week—10 years after first getting members to start stepping up!

Bob and Ian have decided to take a break from running the twice-weekly classes at Amovate’s HQ.

Bob & Ian in the red shirts as some of the fitness class raise their glasses in a toast to their trainers

And the fitness enthusiasts got together to organise a presentation and a barbecue to thank them for all the time and effort they have put in making sure people in the community stayed fit and healthy to enjoy their retirement years—or just to enjoy keeping fit.

They were presented with commemorative tankards which no doubt reflect that the keep fit classes are as much a social gathering as a benefit to health and well-being for those who take part.

Cormac Murphy, one of the members, said the classes had been a huge benefit to everyone who has signed up, and that after a serious knee operation they helped to accelerate his recovery in a way that otherwise would not have been possible.

He pointed out that Bob and Ian’s involvement hasn’t just covered the hour-long sessions, but also the time and effort spent setting up the equipment and then storing it again before and after each of the classes.

There was also the thought and planning that goes into designing the training and exercise circuits for each class to avoid repetition which risks people becoming bored.

Ian, speaking on behalf of himself and Bob, declared: “What a fantastic send-off for Bob and myself after 10 years trying to get VDT reasonably fit, and thank you all for the kindness you showed both Bob and myself.

“The two of us are so grateful for our gifts and I can assure you that the tankards will sit in a place that will always remind us of our happy times at the Old School House.

“People of all ages and fitness have graced our Monday and Wednesday sessions and of course family visitors when they are here to enjoy the sun.

“The BBQ was such a fitting end to the last session that Bob and myself hosted and I can assure you it was thoroughly enjoyed.

“Thanks must go to The Petanca Clube for the exceptional cooked chicken, belly pork and ribs, and Sue P. for making the salads etc…..and of course the ladies who supplied the cakes.

“We have had such fun over our time and of course unforgettable parties which always have great tales to relive….

“And now it’s up to you all to keep going and we know you will and Cormac has started by drawing up a rota of help. So, onwards and upwards!”

As Ian said, Cormac himself will be stepping up to take over some of the classes, along with Julia Curphey who has professional experience in this field, having worked for Dragons Den guru Duncan Bannatyne at one of his health clubs in Shropshire.

And Cormac called for more volunteers to help out. So, if YOU have any experience in the world of fitness training, aerobics etc, please get in touch with Amovate. The details are below.

Keep Fit At Amovate

Retiring to a place in the sun………everyone’s dream.

Sitting out on your terrace under almost permanent blue skies, sipping wine, eating good food, getting fat and unfit…

GETTING FAT AND UNFIT!!!

Well, it does happen! For every cause there’s an effect and if we’re not careful the good life can bite you in the bum.  There’s no doubt that a sedentary lifestyle ages you even quicker than Old Father Time.

But if there’s an effect for every cause there’s a solution to every problem.  You can enjoy the lifestyle, and still help yourself to stay fit and trim simply by joining us at the twice-weekly Keep Fit Class at Amovate.

We happen to believe that, thanks to the efforts of organiser Bob Packham, we now have perhaps the best-equipped gymnasium on the west coast of the Algarve, although we do stand to be corrected should anyone know better.

As you can see from the photographs here we use two adjoining rooms for each session. And you have use of a multi-gym, two professional-standard running or walking treadmills, cross-trainers, exercise bikes, rowing machine, weight benches, abdominal crunchers, a variety of equipment to tone up or strengthen various parts of your body and a large assortment of free weights.

There’s no pressure on anyone—you need do only what you can do and it is up to you how you develop your routines as time passes, in your search for better fitness, strength, mobility and agility levels.

Begun more than nine years ago by Bob’s son, professional fitness coach Chris Packham, the class was taken over by Bob when Chris moved back to the UK to take up a hospital physiotherapy appointment.

Chris keeps in touch with Bob with suggestions and ideas for the classes, and Bob has since been joined in organising and running the classes by Ian Bedford who once took fitness and coaching sessions for semi-professional and amateur football teams.

The classes are held twice a week, at 11.30am on Monday and Wednesday at the Old Schoolhouse, situated where the road forks outside Vales, towards Arrifana to the left and Vale da Telha to the right.
