Aljezurense Championship Match and Dinner

Championship Trophy Presentation

May 26 2012.

PORTUGUESE footballing legend Vicente Lucas was on Vale da Telha at the weekend as part of Aljezurense FC’s Championship celebrations marking their promotion to Division One of the Algarve FA.

Vicente Lucas

Lucas, now 77, was part of Portugal’s 1966 World Cup squad in England.

He is now an Ambassador for Lisbon side Clube de Futebol Os Belenenses, where he played in 12 top Division seasons during a career tragically cut short at the age of 30 when he lost the sight of his right eye in a car accident.

And, to hail J C Aljezurense’s title-winning season, Belenenses—Champions of Portugal on four occasions—sent their veterans team for a celebration match to mark the presentation of the championship trophies.

It was a gesture much appreciated by Aljezurense, as Belenenses, founded in 1919, is one of the oldest and most famous of Portuguese sports clubs. It is based in the Belém quarter of Lisbon, hence the club name, which translates as “The ones from Belém.”

This famous old club is also noted for having played the inaugural football match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on 14 December 1947, against Real Madrid.

Vicente—born in Mozambique and said by Pele to have been the greatest defender he ever played against—led the distinguished group from Lisbon.

And earlier in the day the squad of former Belenenses players visited Vale da Telha for a special lunch at the Vale da Telha restaurant.

Sadly, one of their former players was not able to make the journey—the “Special One” himself Real Madrid and former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho!

At the 1966 World Cup Vicente played in all the group games, including the 3-1 win over Brazil, plus the memorable 5-3 victory over North Korea, as Portugal finished 3rdin the tournament.

Aljezurense meeting Belenenses

After Saturday’s celebration match at the Aljezurense FC ground (won 1-0 by the slower but highly-skilled veterans team that included five former international players!) Aljezurense and the Aljezur Camara hosted a celebration dinner at the Bombeiros HQ.

Amovate were among the invited guests and after the dinner we made our Player of the Year presentation, an annual award that has come to be highly appreciated by the team and staff of Aljezurense FC.

Peter Johnson presents Man of Match award

This year’s award went to newcomer Fábio António, who played major roles in important matches during his first season with the club.

Fábio’s strong tackling, accurate passing, impressive stamina and an eye for goal made him a favourite with the supporters.

His father accepted the trophies on his son’s behalf from Amovate President Peter Johnson as Fábio was away celebrating his last day at University.

Later, a Belenenses spokesman, in a speech of thanks to the players and staff of J C Aljezurense, also praised the Vale da Telha contingent for their loyal and dedicated support of their local club.

J C Aljezurense – Champions 2011-12

Congratulations Aljezurense on a fantastic season winning the league without losing a game.

The squad this season was strengthened in depth and because of this when injuries occurred as they did, some serious, there was enough quality cover to not affect the performances. Congratulations to all the coaches and manager on this impressive season.

This seasons Player of the year trophy was hard fought and in the end it was decided between 4 players. This alone indicates how much the side’s performance has improved and the side did not rely on individuals but on team effort.

The Goalkeeper is always remembered for errors but both  Toco and Abel had excellent seasons and made many memorable saves. The defence with Kieran and Noel centrally forming a solid partnership, although Noel suffered from Red Card Rage at times.

Africano, Tiago and André played important roles and the serious injury to what then was the leading goal scorer, André, was covered well with the youngster of the team Leandro improving with every match.

Claudomiro, Joáo, Jardel, Catita and Pele all scored important goals and I am sure everyone will remember Pele’s fantastic strike in the last game of the season at Bensafrim.

Fábio

Lawrence

Fábio António, New to the club and played major roles in important matches. His strong tackling,   accurate passing, with an eye for goal made him a favourite with the supporters. Fábio has a big engine and runs and runs all day.

Lawrence Mullen, Another new signing this year that surpassed every ones initial thoughts. His quick thinking and deft passes made many goals this year and was always happy to change rolls for the team.

Simão

Simáo Virem, Back for another season having won a medal at Alvor last year. Simáo has been an  important team

member playing up front, in midfield and ending the season as a central defender. Great competitor and became the father figure on the field.

Casinhas

Helder Silva (Casinhas), Without being rude now the old man of the squad, Casinhas again played a major part in the team, his goals were important and he ran out leading goal scorer. Never gives up and as Captain led by example.

AF Algarve 2 Divisão – Unbeaten Champions

Bensafrim 1 – 1 Aljezurense

The last game of the season was sadly a sorry affair with the referee mishandling what should have been a very good local derby. Aljezur still not at full strength, did their best to let their unbeaten record disappear but again Simão 80 and Africa 4 held strong in central defence.

The Bensafrim centre forward was tireless in his efforts and would be a great asset to Aljezurense next term and his enthusiasm and the referees inadequacy almost won the game.

Aljezurense scored half way through the first half with what would win goal of the season on Match of the Day.  A fine move down the left found Pele 14, his turn of speed was too much for the home defence and he hit a fierce shot from the left bending the ball past the outstretched body of the goalkeeper into the side netting of the goal, not that they deserved this lead, but Aljezurense still were looking for a result to end the season unbeaten.

In the second half, Bensafrim took the bull by the horns and fought hard, Aljezurense battled although it was clear they held onto the lead by a thread.  With 15 mins to go a fierce shot by the Bensafrin centre forward from distance skidded on the wet surface and Abel 12 parried the ball into the goal, 1-1.

Heavy rain ensued as both sides fought hard to win the match but alas it fizzled out even and a 1-1 draw.

Aljezurense Players thank their Supporters

Well done Aljezurense finishing the season unbeaten and 8 points clear at the top of the table, now the hard work starts with keeping the players for next season and hopefully reinforcing the squad with some quality.

Aljezurense 1 – 0 Serrano

The Team Celebrate

Aljezurense started this match in Party Spirit as they already knew they were League Champions, donning blue and white sprayed hair, they wanted to enjoy this game although Serrano if they had won, could stay on track to finish runners up.

Aljezur played some inspired football and again Lawrence in midfield sprayed the ball around giving Casinhas and his partner forwards ample chances to score.

Casinhas Enjoying the Celebrations

The winning and only goal came in injury time at the end of the first half, a fine ball played in by Peter 8 beat the visitors defence and the leading scorer Casinhas, collected the ball perfectly to smash the ball past the advancing keeper.

Simão 80 and African 4 had fine games in the centre of defence,  and the match finished as it was intended in the party spirit with the yet to be beaten home side celebrating with the supporters.
