Algarve Oil & Gas Exploration – how to register your opinion

OilAlgarve oil and gas exploration – how to register your opinion
For those who do not view in a positive light the July 1st start date for Galp/ENI’s first exploration well in the ocean off Aljezur,The Algarve Daily News( algarvedailynews.com ) have sent Amovate an edited recent news item which contains two links that you can use to register your opposition to this drilling and to the government’s broader plan to turn Portugal into an oil and gas producer.
There also is a postal and email address for those who are in favour of these developments and wish to register their support for the government plans with the Mineral Resources Authority.

One link below is for those with a Portuguese Contribuinte, or ‘Fiscal’ number (NIF) and the second is for those without.
For those who wish to register either their support or their opposition to the government’s approval and endorsement of the exploration process, there is an email address below for the Mineral Resources Authority.
The (shortened) news item reads as follows:
“While a government inquiry is underway into the onshore oil and gas drilling concessions granted to start-up company Portfuel, the government has announced that offshore drilling is to start on July 1st off the Alentejo coast to the west of Aljezur.
The unexpected announcement that the Galp/ENI consortium is preparing to start drilling 56.5kms off the coast in the Santola concession in under a month’s time has meant anti-oil campaign plans and timetables have rapidly been reconfigured.

The oil concession contracts granted by the government are for exploration through to extraction and the government fully intends to turn Portugal into an oil producing country despite the poor deals that were signed and the cleaner option of leading Europe as a renewable energy supplier.

There is one further formality before drilling starts on July 1st – an opportunity between May 31st and June 22nd for the public to register their opinions in a ‘public consultation’ process.

The current national groundswell of opinion is that oil and gas are not necessary parts of Portugal’s economy, the risk to the country’s booming tourism industry is too great and that Portugal is ideally positioned to lead the booming renewable energy industry.

The public consultation, running between May 31st and June 22nd, asks individuals to email the Mineral Resources Authority on:

dgrm@dgrm.mam.gov.pt

The advice document from DGRM advises anyone wishing for more information to get in touch via post to DGRM, Avenida Brasilia, 1449-030, Lisbon, or by telephone on 213 025 193.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION HERE:
Because of the weaknesses inherent in a public consultation that only allows people to write in or phone up, anti-oil group ASMAA has set up an urgent Public Petition which readers with Fiscal Numbers are invited to complete:
http://peticaopublica.com/pview.aspx?pi=PT81291
When you get to the peticaopublica.com website hit the green ‘Assinar Petição’ button on the right hand side of the home page.

For those without a Fiscal Number, hit this link to add your objection:
https://www.change.org/p/dgrm-director-general-objection-to-offshore-drilling-licence-in-aljezur-offshore-being-granted-to-eni
If enough people sign the Public Petition the subject has to be revisited by parliament.

This could force a suspension of the July 1st drilling off the Alentejo coast while parliament sets time aside to debate the oil and gas issue.

Prince Harry’s Invictus Games – The Vale Da Telha Connection

by Matt D'Arcy

(Click on the photos, and they will present themselves in a larger form)

Prince Harry visited the municipality of Aljezur back in 2008 when he and Prince William surfed in Carrapateira during a stag weekend.

But now, eight years on, there is another local link with the soldier Prince, through his beloved Invictus Games, the “Help For Heroes” project he inspired as a multi-sport event open to all wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans.

Vale da Telha residents Moira and Alan Nightingale—Alan is an Amovate committee member—are hugely proud of their daughter-in-law Catherine, a former Army Major, who won gold and bronze medals for swimming at last month’s Games in the United States.

Prince Harry is the creator, patron and president of the Games, which held its inaugural event in London in 2014. The second staging of the Games, named from ‘invictus’, the Latin word for ‘unconquered’ or ‘undefeated’, took place last month in Florida, attended not only by Prince Harry but also by the US First Lady, Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush.

The man known as “Captain Wales” during his 10 years as a professional soldier said as he opened the Games which ran from May 8th to May 12th in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando:

‘Over the next four days you will see things that in years past would not have been possible. You will be inspired, you will be moved and you will be entertained.’

The Prince also continued his campaign to raise awareness of ‘invisible injuries’ such as post-traumatic stress and depression, which are often suffered by soldiers after returning from war.

‘It is not just physical injuries that our Invictus competitors have overcome. Every single one of them has faced mental challenges,’ he said.

‘Let’s cheer for the woman who fought through post-traumatic stress and let’s celebrate the soldier who was brave enough to get help with his depression.”

That woman could easily have been Catherine Nightingale, who served as a doctor in the army (rank of Major) and now suffers from PTSD after serving in Afghanistan in 2010.

Before flying out to the USA the 110-strong UK team came together at Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Harry and pose with him for the first official team photograph. Catherine can be seen in the centre block of the photograph, right side end of the second row, next to the sponsor’s Land Rover

Catherine, who is married to Moira and Alan’s son James, also won four gold medals in those inaugural Games two years ago in London.

Moira and Alan, originally from Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, are in the process of moving to their new home in VDT sector M, after spending the last 11 years in Espartal, up the hill from Monte Clerigo.

Moira told us: “We are very proud of Catherine and we know our son James is immensely proud of her too. In fact, she has made us proud twice within this last year, firstly by giving us our seventh grandchild, Oliver, seven months ago, and secondly with her wonderful achievements once again in the Invictus Games.

“Those achievements are even more outstanding so soon after Oliver’s birth which restricted her opportunities to train as much as she would have liked”.

Said Catherine, who won gold in the women’s 50m LC backstroke LSD and bronze in the LC 50m ISD freestyle (she also finished fourth in the 50m breaststroke):

“Invictus has given me something to focus on and push myself in sport which builds confidence. This is then transferable to other areas of my life, easing my transition into the civilian world and allowing me to get a job within the NHS where I am now training to be a GP.”

She added with a rueful smile: “Obviously, having Oliver made training become more of a challenge in the months leading up to Orlando, but it was another wonderful experience and I was pleased to be able to add to the team’s medal collection”.

In fact the 110-strong team UK ended the games on a high after taking 131 medals.

They pulled out all the stops on day three of the finals and semi-finals in Orlando, Florida with a stash of medals taken in the pool. A fantastic 46 medals went to the UK in less than five hours of swimming—19 gold medals, 17 silver, and 10 bronze.

All-in-all, more than 500 military athletes from 15 countries competed in ten events, including archery, indoor rowing, power lifting, road cycling, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

The rigorous selection process for the UK team was based on the benefit the Invictus Games will give an individual as part of their recovery, combined with performance and commitment to training.

Although Catherine competed in London two years ago more than 70% of this year’s team were new to the Invictus Games and were spurred on to apply off the back of those inaugural games in 2014.

An Invictus spokesperson said: “Getting involved in sport helps the athletes with self-confidence and the feeling of being psychologically empowered. These significant mental health benefits can be translated outside of sport and into everyday life”.

**Next year’s Invictus Games take place between September 26-30 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and promises to be bigger again, with 600 competitors from 16 nations taking part in 12 events.

From Aljezur To The Alps

From Aljezur To The Alps

The Sound Of Music—Aljezur Style!

Off the Lip 2It may have been the Swiss Alps rather than those in Austria, but the hills still came alive to the Sound of Music—Aljezur style!

As we all know, the Von Trapp family secretly fled Austria into the Swiss mountains.

But popular Aljezur band Off The Lip were last month secretly whisked INTO the Swiss mountains for one of their most glamorous gigs, on the snow-covered slopes of the rather swish Swiss ski resort of Verbier.

Verbier is an alpine village located in the canton of Valais, south-west Switzerland, a holiday resort and ski area recognised as one of the premiere “off-piste” resorts in the world.

It attracts such luminaries as Prince William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Sarah, Duchess of York, who owns a chalet there with her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

But recording stars like James Blunt and Diana Ross who also frequent Verbiers have now been joined by Aljezur’s own recording stars, Off The Lip.

In an atmosphere of total secrecy three members of this west coast band—Jack Golds, Hugo Fontainhas and Ricky Brogden—which has performed several successful gigs at the Restaurante Fonte Do Vale, were flown out to Verbier to perform one of their energetic shows.

The fourth member of the band, Jack’s brother Louie, was already in Verbier where he works during the ski season for luxury chalet company Bramble Ski, totally unaware that his colleagues were on the way to join him for the company’s end-of-season party.

(Jack, a trained lifeguard who has worked on all the local beaches, and Louie live in Aljezur and went to school here. Louie is a keen snowboarder, and both brothers are also surfers who enjoy riding the west coast waves).

The event in Switzerland was organised at the resort’s famous Le Shed venue as a thank-you to Bramble Ski’s staff after a successful winter season. The owners of Bramble Ski didn’t just know of the band through Louie; they also have a home in the Aljezur area where they first became aware of Off The Lip.

Harmonica player Louie, who thought he was performing one of Off The Lip’s original songs solo to a backing track, was caught totally by surprise when his brother Jack and the other band members appeared through the crowd and joined him on stage.

It took a moment to recover from the emotion of all being together after a five-month break. But the new arrivals, who brought guitars but borrowed the rest of the equipment from a local group the Dicktators, then joined a shell-shocked Louie to play their second single release ‘Reggae in the Morning’ as his ecstatic crowd of work colleagues cheered them on.

But the show was only getting started as Off The Lip went on to perform a full set showcasing their brand of unique Algarvian surf rock and roots style music in front of a packed audience, many of whom who, by the end of the night, were dancing on the tables!

Bramble Ski enthused on their Facebook page: “What an epic end to a brilliant season!”

And the band, who spent their last day on the snow slopes before heading back to Portugal, posted: “Thank you everyone for last night—our first international gig, a surprise end of season concert that had everyone rockin’ with us in Le Shed!”

Louie declared after the party: “I am the happiest man in the world! It was one of the biggest shocks of my life when Jack, Hugo and Ricky emerged from the audience. I really have to thank Bramble Ski for flying them out.Off The Lip 1

“It was the best night of my life; a truly epic end of season staff party!”

Guitarist Richard Brogden, who lives in Vale Da Telha and is well known for his mastery of the guitar after appearing at many events around the area (often as Ricky Diamond with Peal C), told us:

“Everything was organised by Bramble Ski. We flew from Faro to Geneva, where we boarded a shuttle link, we drove out of Geneva alongside the lake to the village of Le Chable, where we were met by Colin, a director of the company and taken to a beautiful apartment.

“Overall, we stayed in Switzerland for three nights. The apartment balcony looked out across valleys and snow-covered peaks and in the field right below us there was a herd of cows with those typical heavy Swiss cowbells around their necks, clanging away.

“On the day of the show Louie and the staff were having drinks up the mountain before going down to the surprise party at Le Shed. The three of us had to hide in a nearby pub (no great hardship there!) while they arrived in the village and went into Le Shed.

‘It was wonderful to see the surprise on Louie’s face. He didn’t see the rest of the band approach until we were standing on the stage! When the crowd realised the significance, they went wild too!

“What an experience the whole thing was! Absolutely fantastic and something we’ll never forget”.

Now Off The Lip are busy back in the studio putting the finishing touches to their debut album “Local Foreigner” which is due for release in June.

All in all it was a fantastic couple of days for the band, who were the talk of the town—so much so that plans for a select Swiss tour are taking shape to promote the upcoming album, as their phones started to ring before they even got back home here to the Algarve’s west coast.

Angus’ Bridge Victory

Angus LangAmovate’s Angus Lang and bridge partner Dave Bridgewater hit the headlines last week.

Angus—President of our fiscal council and auditor of the accounts—and Dave won a prestigious bridge tournament that included some professional players.

The tournament at Quinta Jacintina, Vale do Lobo, was part of a charity weekend for SOS Algarve Animals that ran for three days. A total of €9,250 was raised over the weekend.

Angus and Dave took part in the Saturday bridge tournament and emerged triumphant despite the fact that several professional bridge players had flown over from the UK to take part.

That is some achievement, so we are sure you will all join us in sending congratulations to Angus and Dave.
