LATEST UPDATE:

Just to brief you all with an update on some changes of arrangements for the Summer Solstice after further consultations yesterday with Paulo at the restaurant. We think these alterations will make it much easier for everyone…

The restaurant will now be open before 7.30pm, rather than the doors not opening until 7.30pm, so people will be able to take their seats inside before 7.30. There will still be a bar outside beforehand.

Once everyone is seated the staff will then start to serve the starters @ 7.30pm (covers will already be on each table).

MAIN COURSES  will be served around 8.00pm, then there will be a break around 8.45 / 9.00pm for SUMMER SOLSTICE DRINKS that will be served outside. Desserts will then be served after sunset.

Once people start to arrive the Amovate team will allocate group seating so that people may sit together with maximum table sizes of no more than 8 persons to allow the waiting-on staff easy access to all tables. Paulo & his team have been briefed to ensure this year everyone has plenty of food and all main courses will be served around the same time!

The table positioning will be agreed with Paulo so as to ensure his staff can get round to each table easily.

PLEASE NOTE: Very important. There will be no bar tabs–you will pay for your drinks as you receive them, but, whilst you are dining, your orders will be taken at your table and the drinks will be delivered to your table. It may be that just your wine will be delivered to your table and someone in your group will need to go to the bar for other drinks like beers and spirits. But that will be assessed as the evening gets under way.

The band will start playing around 8.00pm ( gentle music ) and they will be doing 3 slots in all.

The most important thing is to ensure everyone is at O Paulo for 7.30pm at the latest.

Anyone arriving later will obviously be delayed in being served or getting a group table.

The doors will be opened at 7,30pm although there will be an outside bar available before that, for early arrivals.

And a strict “No Smoking” policy will be in force both inside the main building and within the glass walls that have been installed since last year’s event, and which will be open or closed depending on whether the conditions are windy.

SOLSTICES AND SUNDOWNERS

A Sundowner in colloquial British English is an alcoholic drink taken after completing the day’s work, usually at sundown.

We can’t promise you Druids—unless any of you wish to don the appropriate regalia—but we do hope for one of Arrifana’s most spectacular sunsets to highlight this year’s Summer Solstice Event at O Paulo, on the Fortaleza headland.

The event is to be held on Saturday June 21^st and as numbers are limited to just 110 people we suggest you book quickly if you would like to be there.

There will be a set menu with course options, and, as last year, live music will be provided by Simao and a four-piece band, who were such a hit at last year’s Summer Solstice.

Ticket prices are €25 for members of Amovate and €27 for non-members and a Sunset Drink at sundown is included in the price.  Tickets are being prepared and will be available from Committee Members – Rick Hursthouse, Matt D’Arcy & Ian Bedford.

And, of course it is worth noting that since last year’s somewhat breezy event Paulo and Petra have had glass walls fitted all around the exterior parts of the restaurant, so the wind will not be an issue this time around, should it spring up.

The evening starts at 7.30pm when the doors will be open, with dinner being served from 8pm.

If anyone wishes to arrive before 7.30pm they will then be guided to an outside bar that is being provided for the evening.

What and when is the Summer Solstice?

The solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2014, the solstice falls on June 21 at 6:51 A.M. EDT.

The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator.

The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).

In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer.

This summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year.
